If you are new to crochet or would like to learn how to crochet, making a dishcloth is a great way to start. It’s small, doesn’t require a lot of supplies and can be any size. It’s not like a garment that won’t fit if you make a bit too big or small. I really like the texture of the stitches used here, it’s in a lot of my patterns including my mug cozy (may post that pattern in the future) my flowered baby beanie, and a baby blanket(available as a free download on Ravelry).
Here we go…
Skill level: Easy
Abbreviations:
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sk – skip
Materials:
- Cotton worsted weight yarn – 50g
- Crochet hook – Size I/5.00mm
- Blunt needle
Gauge: Not important
Finished measurements: 8″ x 9″ (approximate, will depend on your tension but not important)
Ch 30.
Row 1 1sc 1dc in second ch from hook, *sk next ch, 1sc 1dc in next ch. Repeat from * to end of row. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 2 *Sk 1st st, 1 sc 1dc in next st, repeat from * to end of row. Ch1 and turn.
Repeat Row 2 until work measures 8″ from beginning.
Work 1 round of sc evenly around entire cloth, working 3 sc in the corners.
Fasten off and weave in ends. That’s it!!

Pretty dishcloths, Lisa. I have a strange relationship with crochet in that I can crochet stuffies but I cannot seem to crochet flat. These are so pretty that I think I’ll have to give it another try.

You’ll need a size I(i) crochet hook to achieve the same size as my dishcloths. But any medium sized hood will do 🙂

This is my first dishcloth that I have attempted. For some reason the top ended up wider then the bottom. Any idea what I did wrong?

Not sure what happened, but you may have worked into a stitch instead of skipping it and accidentally increased the number of stitches, making the dishcloth wider after that point.
Thank you very much for this! I am new to crochet, and have a ton of pregnant friends. Most of the baby blankets I like are either too complicated, or to “holey”. I have a daughter, myself, and she would always feel cold if I used our crochet blanket with a bunch of holes in it. This looks thick enough, and still light enough, to keep a baby snug and not too hot or cold. Again, thank you! Can’t wait to try this.
For row 2 and on, it says skip 1st st, which stitch am I starting in (how many in from my hook?)

After you chain 1 and turn, you should be working into the third stitch from your hook 🙂
I am making your dishclothes. They look a little different from yours. Wondering if I need to chain 1 after I finish each row. Since the directions don’t state it.

I am confused, pattern does not say to chain 1 after row 2, yet you told Megan to chain 1 and turn. I am beginner and love the texture of the cloth, just cant seem to get the ends correct HELP
The instructions have a ch1 and turn at the end of Row 2.

You can use a metal or plastic darning needle.

When working the sc edging around the dishcloth/cozy do the rows count as dc rows (needing two stitches per row) or sc stitches (needing only 1 stitch per row)?
